Dundrum Castle is a medieval stone castle ruin on a wooded hill above the village of Dundrum, a short walk from the centre. Its round keep and curtain wall stand high enough to give children a real sense of how a Norman stronghold was built and defended, and the grounds are open for families to wander. From the top of the site there are wide views over Dundrum Bay and the Mourne Mountains, so it works well as a short history stop combined with a walk. The ground is sloping and rocky, so it suits children who are comfortable on uneven paths. The site is looked after by the Northern Ireland Department for Communities and admission is free. Access can be restricted at times while works are carried out, so it is worth checking before a visit.
