Stagshaw Garden is a small, informal woodland garden on a steep hillside above Waterhead, at the southern edge of Ambleside in the Lake District. Its rambling paths wind among shrubs, trees and plants to discover, with views over Windermere along the way. Families can keep going into the neighbouring Skelghyll Woods, where a waymarked, easy trail of under a mile takes in some of the tallest trees in England and has benches for a rest or a picnic. The ground is rough and steep in places and there are some steps, so sturdy footwear suits children best. Dogs are welcome on leads. It suits a family that enjoys a gentle woodland walk and a quiet outdoor break rather than a built attraction.
