Burngate Purbeck Stone Centre is a small charitable trust in the Isle of Purbeck where visitors can learn traditional stone carving in workshops overlooking the countryside. It suits families, friends and individuals, with courses for complete beginners as well as more experienced carvers. The Have a Go session is the easiest way for a family to try it: in about two hours each person carves a simple relief into a slab of stone to take home, with an accompanying adult needed for younger children. Courses cover carving, sculpture, masonry and lettercutting, and the centre also runs talks and summer sessions that take in the local geology and landscape. There is a small gift shop of local art and craft and a tearoom serving refreshments, and the views towards the Jurassic Coast are part of the appeal.
