Bethlem Museum of the Mind sits inside the grounds of the Bethlem Royal Hospital and is free to walk into during its public opening days. The bright gallery space shows historical documents, old medical equipment and a large collection of artworks made by patients past and present. Displays follow the hospital's long story from its medieval origins through to modern mental health care, and temporary exhibitions often explore personal stories and challenge stigma. Because the subject matter is historical and sometimes sensitive, it suits older children and teenagers who enjoy history, art and science, with younger children best accompanied closely by a parent or carer. Schools and groups can arrange learning visits. A restaurant and a coffee shop are on the hospital site, and the museum is a short walk in from the gates.
