Facilities

This small museum occupies a former hand-loom weaver's cottage on Queen Street in the village of Skelmanthorpe, near Huddersfield. The ground floor is furnished as a weaver's family living quarters as they would have looked around 1900, so children can see how a working family cooked, washed and slept in a one-up, one-down house. Upstairs, an authentic hand-loom in working order sits alongside displays and artefacts about the district's textile heritage, and a guide typically takes visitors round for about an hour. The centre is a quiet, compact place rather than a hands-on play venue, and it suits school groups, local history fans and older children curious about how cloth was made. Visits are by pre-booking and the centre is usually open on set days, so families should plan ahead. Leaflets for a self-guided walk around the village trail are also available.
