Wakefield Museum is a free local history museum run by Wakefield Museums and Castles, set on the lower ground floor of the Wakefield One building in the city centre. Its galleries follow Wakefield from its medieval and Tudor past through to the modern era, using objects and displays that bring the town's stories to life. Younger visitors are catered for with hands-on activities, family trails and a regular programme of workshops, and the museum runs family activities during school holidays. Temporary exhibitions rotate through a changing gallery. The museum is fully wheelchair accessible with step-free access, and it is a breastfeeding-friendly space. It suits families with young children, school groups and anyone curious about the history of the Merrie City. Because entry is free and no booking is needed, it works well as a relaxed rainy-day stop close to the train station and bus station.
