The Museum of Bath Stone sits in the Combe Down area of Bath and tells the story of the limestone that built much of the city. Displays cover the geology of the stone, the hand-cutting and mining work of the quarrymen, the stabilisation project that secured the old mines beneath the village, and the local bat populations that now use them. Ralph Allen, who owned the quarries in the 18th century, features in the story too. The museum is compact, so a family can see everything in an hour or so, which suits a short outing alongside a walk around the city. Sensory backpacks are available for families who want a more tactile visit, and the museum publishes an accessibility guide. It is a good fit for older children with an interest in geology, history or engineering. Refreshments are available a short walk away in Combe Down and Mulberry Park.
