Beckford's Tower sits on Lansdown Hill just outside the centre of Bath and is one of the city's most distinctive landmarks. Built in the 1820s for the writer and collector William Beckford, it is a neoclassical folly with a museum on its first floor that tells the story of Beckford's life and collection. Families can explore the grotto tunnel and the grounds, and older children who are happy with stairs can climb the tower's many steps to the top for wide views over the city. Children under 18 go free when accompanied by an adult, so it works well as a half-day outing that combines history with a walk. The museum is best suited to school-age children and curious teenagers, and it runs a range of school and group activities. Visitors who cannot manage the stairs can still enjoy a step-free digital tour of the collection in the tower vault.
