The American Museum & Gardens sits in a Grade I listed manor house on a hillside estate above the Avon valley, a short drive from Bath city centre. Inside, period rooms, quilts, folk art and maps tell the story of America from early settlers to the twentieth century, and a changing programme of special exhibitions runs through the year. Outdoors there are wildlife-friendly gardens, including a reproduction of a George Washington garden, woodland walks and open lawns where children can run about. The site runs seasonal indoor and outdoor family trails and offers hands-on learning sessions for school groups. There is a deli with a terrace overlooking the valley, a gallery shop with children's toys and books, and free noise-reducing headphones lent from the ticket office for sensitive visitors. Under-fives go free, and children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Seasonal exhibitions change through the year; the folk art gallery is sometimes closed due to volunteer availability.
