The World of Glass is a museum and visitor centre in the middle of St Helens, a town shaped by glassmaking. Its galleries trace the story of glass from ancient objects through to the Victorian town that grew up around the local glassworks, and it also covers wider local history. Families can watch glassblowing demonstrations in the studio, look through periscopes and microscopes, and play with lenses to see how colour changes in light. The historic Tank House and a glass footbridge over the canal sit alongside the galleries. There is a café and gift shop on site, and the building has a lending library. Children's sessions run through the year, including crafts on Saturdays and holiday workshops. Entry to the museum is free for individuals and family groups, which makes it an easy and low-cost indoor day out whatever the weather.
