The Kilns is the Headington house where C.S. Lewis lived from 1930 until his death in 1963, and where he wrote much of his best-known work, including the Narnia tales. It is now a study centre run by the C.S. Lewis Foundation, and it is still a working residence for scholars, so visits are guided tours rather than open-door museum browsing. Guides take visitors through the rooms and tell the stories of the Lewis brothers and the household they shared. The setting suits older children who already know the books and enjoy the story behind them, and it sits close to a nature reserve linked with the landscapes that inspired Narnia. Holy Trinity Church, where Lewis worshipped and is buried, is a short walk away in Headington Quarry. Families planning a visit should book well ahead, as tour times are limited and fitted around the scholars who live there.
