The Sack House is a small museum run by the Wilts and Berks Canal Trust, housed in a building that once served as a weighbridge, coal merchants and office at the entrance to the old Wantage canal wharf. Its name comes from an enamel sign on the front advertising a sack-hiring company. Inside, displays cover the history of the canal, the wharf and the building itself, along with other industrial archaeology from the area, including the flour mill opposite. The museum is compact, so it suits a short visit for children with an interest in history, engineering or boats, and it pairs well with a walk along the historic line of the canal or a trip to the town's Vale and Downland Museum. Special openings can be arranged for groups, and local cub packs and beaver colonies have visited. Bus services run from the Market Place in the town centre.
