The Sheldonian Theatre is the ceremonial hall of the University of Oxford, designed by Christopher Wren and built in the 1660s. Visitors can see the auditorium and its painted ceiling, then climb the stone steps to the Old Printing Loft and the Cupola for views over the city's rooftops and spires. Visits are self-led, and on selected dates a half-hour guided tour of the auditorium runs. Because the building is still used for university ceremonies, concerts and events, opening times change at short notice, so families should check the calendar before travelling. The site says children of all ages can visit when accompanied and supervised by an adult. The climb to the Cupola is steep and not suitable for everyone, and the upper areas are not step-free. It suits older children and family groups interested in history, architecture and the city.
