What’s there

  • On-street parking only

No museum car park. The site says parking in the village is limited because the streets are narrow; visitors are directed to High Street or Chapel Square.

Only facilities we’ve confirmed are listed — anything missing here we simply haven’t checked, rather than know to be absent.

Hendred Museum occupies Champs Chapel, a Grade I listed former Carthusian chapel in the middle of the village of East Hendred. Inside, the East Hendred Heritage Trust shows village photographs, documents, books and artefacts, with a changing exhibition on the village, the Second World War and the nearby Harwell site. Much of the collection can also be viewed on a screen if it is not on display, and a separate building houses a 19th-century village fire engine. The museum is small and run entirely by volunteers, so a visit is a short, relaxed afternoon rather than a large attraction. Older children may enjoy the wartime material, which the trust says suits Year 6 history work, and school groups are welcome by arrangement. Admission is free, with donations invited. The chapel is a tight space over two floors, so families with buggies or limited mobility should check the access notes before visiting.

Seasonal opening April to October; closed in winter, visits by request.
