Facilities

Wallingford Museum fills two floors of a medieval oak-beamed building in the centre of the Oxfordshire town, and it presents the local story in a way that suits younger visitors. The galleries cover the Saxon town walls, the royal castle, the River Thames and its weirs, Roman burials from nearby Crowmarsh, and a Victorian street scene to explore. Hands-on features include drawers to open and archaeology sandpits, and there are large models of the castle, the bridge and the railway station to look at. Crime fans come for the Agatha Christie and Midsomer Murders connections. The museum is run by volunteers and changes its special exhibitions through the year, and guided walks around the castle site are also offered. Visiting with children is simple, and the museum has a small shop on site.
Seasonal opening March to November; Sundays June to August only.
