Chastleton House is a National Trust property built between 1607 and 1612 and kept much as the same family left it. Rather than a polished show house, it feels like a time capsule: rooms still hold their old furnishings, textiles and panelling, and the stories of the families who lived there are part of the visit. Children tend to enjoy spotting the details of everyday life in earlier centuries and the peculiar touches the later occupants left behind. Outside, the small walled gardens are split into separate spaces, including a topiary garden, a kitchen garden, a wilderness walk and a croquet lawn where the modern rules of the game were first set down, which gives older children room to wander. Parking is a short walk from the house, and an open-air dovecote and parkland add to the outing. The house suits families who like history and a slower pace; visitor numbers are limited to protect the fragile rooms, so booking a time is worth considering on busy days.
Open on a seasonal pattern rather than all year; check the venue's page for the current calendar.
