Oxford Castle Prison is a historic attraction on the western side of the city centre, where a thousand years of history are told through costumed guided tours. Visitors go down into the candle-lit crypt, walk through the 18th and 19th century prison cells and climb the Anglo-Saxon St George's Tower for views over the colleges and rooftops. Tours are led by performers in character, which suits children who enjoy stories about traitors, royals and prisoners. Ghost walks and a themed escape room run from the same site, and the gift shop sells souvenirs. The tour is largely indoors, with a short outdoor stretch up the castle mound, and the site is reached on foot from the railway station. Plan for around ninety minutes to see everything at a relaxed pace.
