The Tolsey is a timber-fronted building on Burford's main street that began as a medieval market house where traders paid tolls. Upstairs, the museum shows the town's past through themed display cabinets: civic maces, charters and seals, guild items, and objects from trades that once thrived locally, such as bell founding, rope-making, quarrying and brewing. A doll's house furnished in the style of the Jane Austen period is one of the more unusual exhibits and tends to hold younger visitors' attention. The collection is compact, so it suits a short visit within a wider afternoon exploring Burford's historic streets. Because the displays are on the first floor and reached by stairs, families with pushchairs or limited mobility should check access in advance. The museum is staffed entirely by volunteers and is run as a registered charity.
