Broughton Castle is a moated, fortified manor house set in parkland, with a core dating from the early 1300s and much of the interior from the 1550s. It is still a family home, so only some rooms are open, but visitors can walk through the Great Hall, dining room, chapel and several bedrooms with guides in each room. Children can enjoy spotting the moat, the gatehouse and the formal garden, and the stone-walled setting makes a good change from a standard day out. The gardens and park are the other draw, with borders, roses and open lawns to wander. A tea room runs on open days, and the grounds are good for a relaxed picnic-style stop in the afternoon. Because it opens only on a few afternoons each week during the summer, it suits a planned visit rather than a spontaneous one.
Open days only in the summer season; Wednesdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays.
