Swalcliffe Barn is a medieval tithe barn in the village of Swalcliffe, a few miles west of Banbury. Built for New College, Oxford, it is one of the finest half-cruck barns in England, and its lofty timber interior is the main draw for visitors. Oxfordshire County Council's Museums Service uses the building to show a collection of agricultural and trade vehicles from the county, including carts and waggons that are large enough to impress younger visitors. A separate display, put together by the Friends of Swalcliffe Barn, tells the story of the village's history over two thousand years. The barn also holds a historic fire pump with its own story to tell. The visit suits families with an interest in old machinery and rural life, and local schools bring groups along. It is a short, low-key outing rather than a full day, and admission is free.
