The Suffolk Regiment Museum occupies The Keep at Gibraltar Barracks, Bury St Edmunds, a Grade II listed 'toy fort' armoury built in 1878 and one of only nine surviving 1870s regimental Keeps. Opened in 1935, the museum tells the story of the Suffolk and Cambridgeshire Regiments from 1685 (when King James II ordered the raising of the regiment) through the battle honours of Dettingen, Minden and Gibraltar, the Great War's 23 battalions, and the Second World War, right up to the regiments' continuation today through The Royal Anglian Regiment. Displays include uniforms, medals, badges, drums, brooches and Victoria Crosses, and the ground floor corridor has a virtual tour screen showing the first-floor gallery, which currently has no step-free access. Admission is free with donations welcomed, and the museum depends on visitors to keep its collection open. Open Wed-Fri and the first Sunday of each month, 9.30am-3.30pm, with group visits by prior arrangement. There is a disabled toilet and step-free access to the ground floor displays, and limited visitor parking at the rear of the Keep.
