Sharpenhoe Clappers

Sharpenhoe Clappers is a classic chalk escarpment in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, cared for by the National Trust. It is crowned with traces of an Iron Age hill-fort and an impressive beech wood, and the ridge offers far-reaching views across Bedfordshire - a favourite spot for woodland walks, kite flying and picnics. The site is part of the wider Sharpenhoe group of countryside areas (Sundon Hills, Moleskin and Markham Hills, Sharpenhoe Clappers and Smithcombe Hills) north of Luton. Seek out the old chalk quarry on the hillside, full of flowers and butterflies in summer, and follow the Icknield Way long-distance path which passes through the site. Entry is free with a free car park on Sharpenhoe Road (6'6" height barrier). Dogs are welcome, and the steep chalk escarpment terrain makes it best for active families rather than pushchairs.
