Cardiff Castle stands in the city centre within green parkland, surrounded by shops and streets. It began as a Roman fort, then Norman lords built the stone walls and keep that still dominate the skyline. In the 19th century it became a spectacular Victorian residence with rich interiors, colour and craftsmanship. Few castles sit so closely alongside modern urban life. The castle contains nearly 2,000 years of history from Roman defences and medieval towers to lavish Victorian rooms, offering views across the city.
Opening hours vary between summer (March-October) and winter (November-February). During the summer concert season (early June to mid August) the Castle may open late or close early on concert days - check the website before visiting.
