Founded by William the Lion in 1178, Arbroath Abbey was one of Scotland's grandest monasteries for nearly 400 years. The ruins centre on a striking west front with twin towers. The famous Round O window, once lit to guide sailors, overlooks the sea. Inside the visitor centre, audio-visual exhibitions tell the story of the Declaration of Arbroath and the abbey's role in Scottish history, and display a copy of the Stone of Destiny.
Closed 25-26 December and 1-2 January; closes at 2pm (last entry 1pm) on 24 December.
