Broughty Castle stands on a strategic point in the Tay, built in 1490 to defend against English naval activity. The castle changed hands several times — taken by the English in 1547, reclaimed by the Scots after two and a half years, then lost again in 1651. In 1860, facing a French invasion threat, it was converted from a ruin into a modern artillery defence and further altered during the two world wars. It now houses a museum run by Leisure & Culture Dundee, with displays on the life and times of Broughty Ferry, its people, the local environment and wildlife.
