Traigh Mhòr (Tràigh Mhòr), meaning 'Big Beach' in Scottish Gaelic, is a magnificent expanse of white shell sand at the northern end of the Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides. This stunning beach is world-famous as the runway for Barra Airport — the only beach airport in the world where scheduled flights land directly on the sand. The beach runs from the village of Ardmhor to Eoligarry, with the tidal islet of Orosay at its north end. The hard compacted sand makes it perfect for walking, cockle picking, and building sandcastles. When the windsock is up and a plane is due, the beach becomes an active runway — a thrilling sight for children and adults alike. The beach is also popular for cockle picking (known locally as 'The Cockle Strand'), and visitors can watch Twin Otter aircraft take off and land on the sand between tides. Free access year-round. Note: Beach is at its best at low tide; access is restricted during scheduled flight times for safety.
Beach accessible year-round. Best at low tide. Access may be restricted during scheduled flight times at Barra Airport for safety — look for windsock and listen for aircraft. Cockle picking season varies.
