Tentsmuir combines forest trails winding between tall trees and open sand dunes beside the sea. The coastal grassland holds wildflowers in spring and summer, while seabirds feed on shellfish offshore. Red squirrels live in the trees, roe deer in the undergrowth, and seals sometimes bask on the sand. The Morton Lochs on the western edge are part of Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve, with four hides for watching waterbirds and dragonflies. The dunes and sand flats at Tentsmuir Point and Tayport Heath are also part of the reserve. Stone Age tools and a fire pit have been found near Morton Lochs, and Second World War concrete anti-tank blocks built by Polish troops are buried in the dunes, sometimes uncovered as sand shifts.
Summer opening (Apr-Oct): 8am-9pm (last entry 8:30pm). Winter opening (Nov-Mar): 8am-dusk.
