With a one to three year old, the useful part of the day is the first two hours after breakfast. That is when they will throw themselves at a play space and actually engage with it. Start here, because Adventures in Wonderland is an interactive play space built for ages 1–8 and your child sits at the very bottom of that range, which means they need to be fresh to get anything from it. It is a dedicated arts centre for children and families, so the scale and the sightlines are pitched at small people rather than adapted for them. There is a children's library on site if the play space is busy or your toddler needs ten quiet minutes on the floor with a book, and a café for a mid-morning stop. The escape rooms are listed for ages 8+ and 9+, so those are for a return visit in several years, or for an older sibling with one adult while you stay in Wonderland. Z-arts also runs theatre shows, creative classes and free activities — worth checking what's on the day you go, since a short dance or storytelling performance can land well with a toddler who is past playing but not ready to leave.

This is the middle of the day: lunch in the café, then as much or as little gallery as you get away with. It's free, which is the single most useful fact for this age group — you can walk out after twenty minutes without feeling you've wasted anything. Aim at two things and stop. Stan the Tyrannosaurus rex and April the Tenontosaurus are the obvious draw and need no explaining to a two year old beyond "big". The Vivarium, with live amphibians and reptiles, works because things move in it. Living Worlds and the Egypt and Sudan, South Asia, Chinese and African galleries are spread over multiple floors; treat them as somewhere to push a buggy in the warm rather than a checklist. Trails, performances and talks run through the year, and the Top Floor hosts events, so there may be something running when you arrive.

Only go if there is energy left. The draw at this age is the bumpers and ramps for younger players, which let a toddler push a ball down a lane and watch something happen, plus the arcade games and the LED lighting. A lane takes up to six players, so a big family group fits on one. Food and drinks come to the lane, which matters when nobody can be walked anywhere. It sits in a unit inside Harpurhey Shopping Centre, so you arrive under cover.
Lunch and the middle of the day
Parrs Wood Entertainment Centre
Hold this one back. It combines tenpin bowling and adventure golf in one complex, has a café and a picnic area, and works across a range of ages — so it is the stop to swap in if you want a longer sit-down afternoon in one building instead of the bowling trip, or to save for the next wet weekend.
Moving between the stops means short hops across the city rather than a day of driving, and each arrival is into a building, which is the point of this particular four. If the day is going badly, cut Tenpin Manchester and go home from the museum — it costs you nothing. If rain sets in hard, do Z-Arts and Manchester Museum properly and give the whole afternoon to Parrs Wood Entertainment Centre, where the picnic area gives you somewhere to sit with your own food.
