Viables Craft Centre is a group of converted workshop-style buildings on the southern side of Basingstoke, home to a range of small independent shops, makers and food outlets. Families can browse the craft and gift units, look round a sweet shop, and stop for refreshments at the family-run tearoom. There is a studio where visitors can choose a ceramic piece and paint it, which suits a relaxed indoor activity on a wet afternoon. The centre is also home to a model engineering society whose miniature railway runs public days at certain times of the year, so it is worth checking dates before a visit. The site has level access and accessible toilets. It suits a slow, unhurried outing rather than a busy attraction, and works well alongside a walk or a trip into town.
