What’s there

  • Café on site
  • Parking

On-site car park with 3 free designated accessible spaces; coach parking available for groups (WWT pages). Access is also possible from Ely or Downham Market off the A10 if the A1101 floods.

Only facilities we’ve confirmed are listed — anything missing here we simply haven’t checked, rather than know to be absent.

WWT Welney Wetland Centre sits on the Ouse Washes in the Fens, a wide wetland landscape known for large flocks of wild birds. Families can start in the visitor centre, which has displays, a café with views across the reserve and a gift shop, then head out along the boardwalks and trails to a series of hides. The main observatory is heated and has a commentated swan feed in winter, while summer brings breeding birds, dragonflies and pond dipping stations for younger visitors. The centre also runs events at dawn and after sunset for a more intimate look at wildlife. The site is mostly flat and suits pushchairs and wheelchairs, with a loan fleet of manual wheelchairs and mobility scooters on request. It works well as a relaxed half-day or full day out for children of most ages.

Questions parents ask

Is there a café, or should we bring a picnic?
There is a café at the centre. The structured data confirms this facility is available, so you can buy refreshments on the day rather than having to pack a full picnic.
Can I manage a visit with both a toddler and an older child?
The centre suits all age groups from babies through to teens, and features a mix of activities including viewing wildlife from hides, a bird feeding station, and exploration of Lady Fen. However, buggy-friendliness has not been confirmed, so you may want to check this before your visit.
Is there parking, and how far is it to walk from the car?
Parking is confirmed at the centre. The distance from the car park to the main areas is not specified on this page, so contact the venue directly if you need details about accessibility from the car park.
Does it work in bad weather?
The centre includes both indoor and outdoor elements. The hides for viewing wildlife and indoor facilities mean you can still have a visit in wet weather, though some activities like exploring Lady Fen may be less appealing in poor conditions.
