Clough Castle is an Anglo-Norman earthwork castle in the village of Clough, a short drive from Downpatrick and Newcastle. A large mound, the motte, rises above a smaller crescent-shaped courtyard called the bailey, with a ditch between them. Children can explore the outline of the old defences, climb up to the stone tower house that still stands on top, and take in wide views towards the Mourne Mountains and Slieve Croob. The site is open to the public all year and is free to enter, so it suits a short stop on a family drive or a walk around the village. Because the ruins are protected State Care monuments, visitors should keep to the marked routes, take litter home and supervise younger children near the steep mound. Under-16s must be accompanied by an adult.
