Rheged is a large visitor centre built into a grass-covered hill on the edge of Penrith, close to the M6 and the northern gateway to the Lake District. Its main draw for families is the big-screen cinema, which shows films including 3D presentations. There is also an art gallery with changing exhibitions and an indoor play area for under-8s, where visits are booked in timed slots. Craft workshops in the Making Space, a toy shop with a large Lego range and a café with a children's menu round out the offer. Much of the day happens under cover, which suits a wet or windy visit as well as a relaxed family outing. The centre hosts children's films, pantomimes and school-holiday events through the year, and offers a film party package for birthdays.
Outdoor play area is permanently closed; Christmas pantomimes and school-holiday events run through the year.
