The earthwork remains of one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in Britain sit just outside the old town walls of Cirencester. Built in the early second century for the city of Corinium, it once held around 8,000 spectators. Families can walk the grassy banks, read the interpretation panels at the entrances and picture the games and shows that once took place in the arena. A walking trail links the site with the town centre, and the Corinium Museum nearby holds Roman artefacts from the town. Dogs on leads are welcome. The ground is uneven and sloping, so it suits children who enjoy climbing and exploring, and it is a good place for a picnic on the grass. Entry is free.
