Midsummer Common is a large green space on the north-west edge of Cambridge city centre, bordering the River Cam. Houseboats moor along the south bank and college boathouses line the north bank. The common is grazed by a herd of Red Poll cattle between April and October, and has been restored with native tree planting and wildflower seeds to boost biodiversity. Families come here to walk, picnic and enjoy the riverside, and the common hosts the annual Midsummer Fair (one of the oldest fairs in England), the city's Strawberry Fair and the annual bonfire night celebrations.
