Mugdock Country Park is a family favourite on the northern edge of Glasgow, close to Milngavie, with around 270 hectares of woodland, moorland and heathland criss-crossed by a network of paths. Kids can burn off energy in the play park beside the main car park, discover the ruins of 14th-century Mugdock Castle (stronghold of the Grahams of Montrose) overlooking Mugdock Loch, and follow waymarked trails such as the Toadstool Trail past the Craigend Castle ruins and the WW2 gunsites.
The Courtyard is the hub of the park: pop into the Visitor Centre for a free map and advice from the friendly staff, browse the Gift Shop, and enjoy refreshments at the cafes (there is also a garden centre and gallery). The park runs a packed calendar of family events throughout the year, including Wildlife Weans and Forest Families sessions, music at the Bandstand, and ranger-led workshops bringing nature and history to life — see the Mugdock Park Eventbrite for what's on.
Entry and parking are free. The main car park is open 9am-6pm daily and the grounds are open and accessible all day, every day. The West Highland Way passes through the park, the nearest train station is Milngavie, and the park is around 10 miles from Glasgow city centre.
