Swithland Wood is a 170-acre ancient woodland and Site of Special Scientific Interest lying directly north of Bradgate Park, together forming the Bradgate Park & Swithland Wood National Nature Reserve. Families can explore well-signed, waymarked routes through mature oak, birch, alder and lime woodland, with carpets of bluebells in spring and a rich variety of butterflies, moths and birds throughout the year. Dogs, cyclists and horse-riders are welcome on the appropriate routes. There are two pay-and-display car parks (south off Roecliffe Road, north off Swithland Lane) and the flooded former slate quarries are out of bounds. The nearest public toilets are at Bradgate Park Hallgates car park.

Swithland Wood has something to see throughout the seasons, including carpets of wildflowers and bluebells in spring and an annual outdoor Bluebell Church Service each May.
