Gough's Cave is the largest of Cheddar Gorge's show caves, formed over 500,000 years ago as river water dissolved the limestone. You walk through cathedral-like chambers decorated with stalagmites and stalactites, including formations named St Paul's Cathedral and Solomon's Temple. Atmospheric lighting highlights the rock features and creates a shadow that looks like a cat wearing a bow-tie. The cave maintains a year-round temperature of 11°C and contains shelves of maturing Cheddar cheese. Audio guides tell the story of the cave's Ice Age formation, Stone Age occupation by the Horse Hunters of Cheddar Gorge, and the discovery of Cheddar Man, a 10,000-year-old skeleton. Guides are available in multiple languages, including a special version for younger explorers. The cave has steps and a steep gradient and can be wet underfoot.
Stone Age SOS summer event: 18 July - 1 September. Lookout Tower closes at dusk in winter; 4.30pm in summer.
