Coate Water is a country park 5 kilometres south-east of central Swindon with a lake, nature reserve, woodland and open grassland. The most popular walk goes around the lake (1.75 miles, about 45 minutes at a gentle pace), with longer routes to Hodson, Chiseldon and Barbury Castle. Many paths are level and surfaced, suitable for wheelchair users. The lake is a nesting site for waterfowl, reed bunting and warblers in spring and summer, and supports dragonflies, damselflies, carp, bream and pike. Woodland has willow, ash, oak and birch. The park has a Splash Park play area, miniature railway, golf course, angling, bird hides and a ranger centre with café. Dogs are allowed except in the nature reserve, Splash Park and golf courses during the open season.
